Mileena

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    None

Enemies:    Kitana

Fighting styles:    Tae Kwon DoNinjitsu

Episode:    Shadow of a Doubt

PAST

Mileena was an exceptionally skilled soldier of Shao Kahn’s forces. Her fighting abilities were above many other of her companions, and the emperor favoured her for it. But a lot of warriors wouldn’t look twice at Mileena, literally. This is because of her unbelievably ugly face: her forehead is hideously low, her teeth are crooked and bucked, her eyes are small and squinty and her skin is wrinkled and rotten. For this, much of the emperor’s minions mistake her to be weak and stupid, and this has caused Mileena to be an outcast.

But Shao Kahn had sympathy for the woman, so he devised a plan against the Mortal Kombat champion, Kung Lao, that involved her help. It was ingenius.

Using his magical sword, Shao Kahn captured Pincess Kitana’s reflection and cealed it inside the sword. he summoned Mileena, and transferred Kitana’s reflection to her face. Within seconds, Mileena was the image of Kahn’s stepdaughter in every way. The emperor promised that if Mileena were to assassinate Kung Lao, he’d allow her to remain beautiful forever.

Meanwhile, down in the Cobolt Mines, a spy named Vorpax reported to sorcerer Shang Tsung about the plan. Being Kung Lao’s arch enemy, Shang wanted Lao to die by his own hand. He told Vorpax to warn Mileena that if she killed Kung Lao, Shang Tsung would return the favour and kill her.

Upon seeing Mileena, Kung Lao thought he was looking at his close friend, Kitana. Mileena had loads of chances to murder him, but after hearing the sorcerer’s threat, she could never scrape up the courage. When she finally did, though, Kitana turned up just in time.

After loosing to the princess and failing to kill the champion, the bottom half of Mileena’s face lost its beauty. Shao Kahn sent her back to the army with a mask to cover the ugliness.

Leaving her Kitana’s radiant eyes to remind her of what she tried to be, he also left her a horrid mouth to remind her of what she really was.

PRESENT

Mileena is still called to the emperor to carry out deeds once in a while, so she hasn’t been totally punished. Her new eyes and forehead are better than nothing. She gets more attention and praise than she used to, but she will always hate the pretty girl who destroyed her lifelong dream.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
A very aggressive and vicious fighter, Mileena takes pleasure in hearing her enemies gasp in pain and surprise. Every blow she lands adds another aspect to the fight, as it persuades her opponent to try something else. Although every strike may be hard, sharp and breaking, she never has the exact focus needed to perfect her abilities. Her burning anger sometimes fuels her to attack without thinking, never considering the possibility that it might not be the right kind of move. Mileena is definetely not lacking in killer instinct, but she does have too much of it. She is an expert with the two Sai blades she hides in her boots, and her use of kicks is certainly admirable.

Defence:
Mileena’s defence, however, needs to be much, much better. If she just took the time to think about defending herself, and maybe train that little bit harder, she would be that little bit deadlier. But disappointingly, her defence falls flat on its ass when it comes to blocking a mere kick to the head. Mileena is much more capable than that but her personality sees defence as cowardly and time-consuming.

Mika

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Siann, Sora, Quan Chi

Enemies:    Shang Tsung, Qali, Kung Lao, Siro, Taja

Fighting styles:    Vale TudoHikka Ken

PAST

Mika was once a rotting corpse, a dead body of something that was never alive. Such a thing can only exist in the horror world known as the Netherealm. There lost souls float aimlessly in the skies and monsters lurk behind every corner. Mika didn’t even have a name before she was found by the gifted sorcer Quan Chi.

Quan Chi had a plan. He would find as many carcasses as possible, and bring them to life as amazingly skilled warriors. Quan Chi was looking to capture as many souls as he could, with the help of his undead slaves. If all went according to plan, Quan Chi could become one of the wealthiest men in existence.

Even though Mika’s life is a million times what it used to be, she is still maltreated by her master, who threatens to return her to oblivion if she takes a wrong step.

PRESENT

Mika is currently staying in Quan Chi’s fortress, where he is slowly trying to build an army of walking corpses, every one of them just like her. She is also after making a handful of enemies, though, so it would be wise of her to mind herself. She has fought many people who had nothing against her. But she has done at the order of Quan Chi, who is the one holding her beautiful body together. And that is good enough for her.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
Mika’s main flaw is hidden, but it is proven if you watch her battles closely. When she fights against someone who she is sure she can beat, she will not hold back and will let loose many of her smashing moves. But when she fights against someone she knows has great powers and fierce abilities, she will become frightened and will fight with great hesitation. She can be as quick and as strong and as deadly as she wants to, but her fear is the obstacle that she must conquer the most.

Defence:
Hugely impressive when faced with an average foe, but becomes a little weak against larger challenges. An example of this is her fight against Kung Lao: at the beginning of the fight, she tumbles and dodges any way she can. But then she learns how skillful he is, and becomes unsure of whether to launch an attack or put up a strong defense.

Lori

Life Status:    Mortal

Friends:    Kung Lao

Enemies:    None

Fighting styles:    (supposedly) ShaolinJujitsu

Episode:   The Festival of Death

PAST

Many years ago, when Lori was a young girl, she trained as a martial artist in the Temple of the Order of Light. The monks there were very kind to her, and they trained her extremely well to become a very formidable fighter. She became friendly with a boy her own age named Kung Lao, who also trained at the temple. But Kung Lao was a year older, and when it was his time, he left the temple to start a life. By the time it was Lori’s turn to leave, she had lost contact with Kung Lao and didn’t see him again for a long time.

PRESENT

Lori eventually did catch up with Kung Lao, asking him to train her to become as skilled as him. But at this time, there was a fighting festival after being set up in Zhu ZHin, run by the notorious warrior Qali. It was a tournament, and the winner was said to receive a hefty sum of prize money. Lori jumped at the chance, not knowing that the tournament was a scheme set up by the sorcer Quan Chi to gather new souls. Lori won the tournament, but when Kung Lao, Siro and Taja arrived, hell broke loose and the captured souls escaped. The three Earth warriors managed to escape, while the fiery souls killed everyone inside. Including Lori.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Lori’s matches in the tournament were not shown in the series, so it’s difficult to tell how she fights. However, since she was trained by the same monks as Kung Lao, it’s very likely that her style is similar to his.

Kreeya

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Vorpax, Reptile

Enemies:    Kung Lao, Taja, Siro, Shao Kahn

Fighting style:    Kung Fu

PAST

Kreeya is the queen of an unknown realm. It is much the same as the others, with only one difference: its the females who do battle. The men in their realm stay put while Kreeya and her armies of warrior women set out, conquering lands to add to the queen’s growing empire.
Not only is she the queen of her race, but she is the mother of every inhabitant. There’s not one person in her world that has some relation to her, and therefore she is the oldest, wisest and most powerful being of her realm.

PRESENT

Kreeya’s first-born daughter, Vorpax, has escaped from the Cobolt Mines and from Shang Tsung. He is a mighty sorcerer who mistreated Vorpax and kept her prisoner in the mines. But Vorpax kept her real identity secret, and she patiently waited for her mother to save her. And so, one day when Shang Tsung was alone, Kreeya sent an army of her fighters to attack the mines. The owner of the mines, emperor of Outworld Shao Kahn, was unaware of this and his forces had to do battle without his leadership. A handful of the women made it into the mines, where they fought and defeated Shang Tsung, taking him and Vorpax out of the tunnels and straight back to Kreeya.
With her daughter safely home, Kreeya has hopes to destroy Shao Kahn’s empire and claim it as her own. Not only that, she plans to take over Earth Realm in the process, by mating with a male from the mortal land and spawning another few thousand more warriors. To aid her in her quest, she has joined forces with the leader of a fallen realm, Reptile. By mating with him, she will have another few thousand fighters at her disposal. if all goes according to plan, Kreeya will eventaully have anough armies to take on the ruthless Shao Kahn and snatch Outworld from his grasp.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
She may not look it, but Kreeya is as strong as an ox. She can easily lift a large wooden crate over her head and some of the attacks she lands on her opponents have lasting damage. She took on both Shang Tsung and Kung Lao at the same time for much longer than could be expected. Her speed and reflexes are just as deadly, as she can attack and defend in all directions without difficulty. She has an amazing talent to recover from hits in an instant, making fighting her a hard and fatal task. Her use of sword-straight punching seems blinding and the way she places her kicks is a dream to watch.

Defence:
Kreeya probably learned to defend before she could walk. Her evasive tactics work wonderfully when fighting kick-based opponents, while her mastered blocking experience aids her like magic when going up against more aggressive fighters. Often she will turn an incoming attack the other way by snatching the enemy limb and holding her opponent in place, allowing her to drive in with a strong counter attack or simply throw her foe head-over-heels.

Kitana

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Kung Lao, Siro, Taja

Enemies:    Shao Kahn, Mileena

Fighting Styles:    Special Edenian Arts (SEA)

Episode:    Shadow of a Doubt

PAST

Millenia ago, Kitana was born in the realm of Edenia. The name of her father, the king, is unknown, but it is known that her mother was Queen Sindel. Her unique self-defence style was invented by her parents, so that all the people of the realm would be able to take care of themselves. When she had perfected the art, she was given permission to tweak it and edit it to her own liking. Kitana did this by adding her favourite weapons, two iron fans, to the SEA. She studied hard and became one of the deadliest fighters on the planet. But she was not the only one, as all of the other citizens of Edenia were practicing too.

This way, the people of Edenia lived safely, and when the style was eventually mastered by every citizen (who hadn’t already mastered a fighting style), the death rate decreased pleasingly.

This was the thing that made the Edenian empire so powerful. Foreign worlds attempted conquest, only to be taken by surprise on learning how evey bystander wasn’t totally helpless. And if you take that number of fighters, and add it Sindel’s actual army, you have an almost invincible kingdom.

But nothing could have prepared Edenia for Shao Kahn’s torrential invasion. The Emperor of Outworld had already taken over many different worlds, and Edenia’s fate was no different to theirs. Cities crumbled, people were slaughtered, creatures were slayed, and in the end only smoking waste existed wherea magnificent land had once stood.

Kitana was among the few that survived Shao Kahn’s onslaught. She had witnessed her father commit suicide and her mother being sacraficed. One of her best friends had been separated from her in the armageddon, her mother’s most trusted guard, Rain. Only her companion Qali managed to stick with her when she was captured by Shao Kahn and thrown into one of his prisons.

Kitana was lucky to learn that she was going to be spared, and that Kahn was going to adopt her as his own child. Though she wouldn’t give any love to her new stepfather, she was thankful that she was allowed to live after all.

Though she was no longer the daughter of a king, she was still known as Princess Kitana. During her stay in Outworld, she secretly passed food and water to Shao Kahn’s prisoners. In return, they taught her many moves from their own martial arts. This continued, and after a few thousand years had passed, Kitana had become more dangerous than ever before.

PRESENT

When Kitana attempted to use the Essence of Edenia (a small, pink flower with extraordinary powers) to resurrect her ancient race, Qali attempted to prevent it. She had been sent by Shao Kahn to betray Kitana and retrieve the Essence. Qali failed, however, though it was believed that she had destroyed it. The princess was crestfallen, until Mortal Kombat champion, Kung Lao, presented it to her. After Kung Lao’s good deed, Kitana became his close friend. Now, Out of the sight of Shao Kahn, she aids him in his fight against Outworld any way she can. Kitana often sends him warnings of ambushes, spies etc. Without Kitana’s help, it’s a possibility that the three Earth warriors could be rotting carcasses already.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
Kitana’s SEA has allowed her to make her attacks more swift, strong and last but not least, more painful than many other combatants. She is not one to barge in, fists punching in all directions. Using her brilliant defence abilities, she will wait for a perfect opening and grab the opportunity to strike. Kitana is talented using rapid close-range punching, and also with long-range kicks to keep her foes at bay. Surpisingly, she is not exactly Kiri in the speed department, but makes up for it with her amazing strategy and high-impact blows. The final thing to point out is (obviously) the two iron fans that she keeps in her boots. Kitana is an absolute master with those weapons. Should any poor soul get in the way of those swirling blades, you can guarantee a deep, throbbing wound and a long trail of blood.

Defence:
It’s not a surprise to learn that most of her ancient style is based on defence. Kitana can block just about anything that comes her way, if she puts her mind to it. Her brief confrontation with Kung Lao prooves that point, and if we fast forward a bit, her fight against Liu Kang will show you what I mean too. Much of her defence has a taste of grappling, as she often utilises throws, holds and locks to her advantage.

Kiri

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Ankha, Reptile

Enemies:    Kung Lao, Shao Kahn

Fighting styles:    Mugen Tenshin

PAST

Kiri comes from an old, unusual race of creatures that supposedly became extinct millions of years ago. She is half-reptile, giving her abilities that no other warrior posseses. Her beauty and her charm have taken her a very long way, enabling her to trick and manipulate certain adversaries. She tricked the Earth mortals into believing that she was a seer, in an attempt to lure them to her assassin, Noob Saibot. She again fooled them when she returned with her maybe-more-than-a-friend Ankha, declaring that she actually belonged to an army of females, led by emperor Kreeya.

PRESENT

Kiri now works side-by-side with the leader of Zaterra, her realm of origin. He is known simply as Reptile. Kiri and Reptile struggle to return Zaterra to its former glory, and take any oppurtunities that might come along. They made an alliance with Kreeya to try to annihilate the Earth mortals, and are now building an army to destroy the kingdom of Shao Kahn, emperor of Outworld.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
Kiri’s skills are nothing short of stunning. Her infinite agility, her blinding speed, her unlimited flexibility. In fact, she is arguably the most twistable, flipable and bendable character in all of the series. Though the actual force of her attacks may be somewhat weaker than most, the sky is the limit to what Kiri is cabable of. She is also the owner of one of the most spectacular moves ever seen in the series.

Defence:
There is no arguing that Kiri’s methods are more focused on attacking. But when, on the off chance, that it comes to a point where she can’t actually bend backwards under a punch, she momentarily diverts to a boring old block. Then off she goes again. Her favourite way of avoiding an attack is to run for the nearest wall, clamber up, and intimidate an opponent with a frightening hiss.

Jola

Life Status:    Mortal

Friends:    Shang Tsung

Enemies:    Kung Lao, Siro, Taja, Vorpax, Kebral

Fighting styles:    None. Ability to fight fuelled by the powers of The Black Dragon.

Episode 7:    Debt of the Dragon

PAST

Jola is member to an infamous underground clan known as The Black Dragon. The clan is run by her father, a man known as Bannak. Her older brother, Kebral, is also part of this organisation. The two siblings are highest in command of The Black Dragon, second to their father, but it is Kebral who will inherit the throne after Bannak’s death. Jola is extremely jealous of her older brother, and it has lead to great bitterness between them. The throne of The Black Dragon means more to her than Kebral might realize.

PRESENT

The trading post belonging to Kung Lao, Siro and Taja is owed to The Black Dragon. Its previous owner, Baron Reyland, lost it to them by gambling. He is now dead, and The Black Dragon wants what is theirs.

The three warriors refuse to give up the trading post. This leads to an angry feud, with Jola caught in the middle. She badly wants to take the trading post by force, and she also wants to be the first heir to the throne. Remembering the legend of her family’s ancient, albeit dangerous powers, she seeks help from the sorcerer Shang Tsung. He makes a deal with her: if she were to have access to the powers, it would mean the death of Kung Lao. She agrees without hesitation.

With her earth-shattering new abilities of The Black Dragon, she murders her father and her brother, before heading to the trading post to claim the life of her enemies. Jola is completely invincible during her fight with Kung Lao and Siro. However, as Shang Tsung had warned her before, the powers of the Dragon are near uncontrollable. Just as the powers begin to suck the life from Jola, Shang Tsung transports her back to the Cobolt Mines and takes them from her. The sorcerer tells Jola that he will keep her prisoner until she learns to harness and control the Dragon’s powers properly.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
Without the powers of The Black Dragon, Jola’s skills are extremely limited. However, when she possesses the Dragon’s unique abilities within herself, she becomes the most unstoppable force. Her strength is hugely increased, especially through her kicks. Through her fight with Kung Lao and Siro you will notice how brutal her kicks can be. Her punches are fast and heavy, leading to tremenously powerful blows, but Jola is too short in height to rely on her fists. Using punches to an extent may put her at a disadvantage. Even when she does get in close, it is much wiser to put her Aikido-like holds to use instead of punches or kicks. Jola does not usually take part in hand to hand combat. Instead she uses her power by throwing fire. Also if she touches someone she can use her powers and kill them.

Defence:
Weak enough, given that she is a master of combat with her newfound abilities. Her blocking is shocking, although in other ways her defense can be effective. And cool-looking too. Jola is remarkably agile when in battle, using well-timed ducks and dodges combined with perfect somersaults and spins. Never before have I seen a fighter air-cartwheel out of an arm lock with such grace.

Bannak

Life Status:    Mortal

Friends:    Kebral, Jola

Enemies:    Shang Tsung

Episode 7:    Debt of the Dragon

PAST

Bannak is the high ruler of an underground organisation known as the Black Dragon. This group terrorizes the city of Zhu Zin to get what it wants, and has a reputation for being one of the most powerful clans in history.
Bannak knows of the ancient powers of The Black Dragon. It is unclear to all others as to where they originated. These almighty powers are deadly in the hands of someone who does not know how to control them. As a result, no memeber of The Black Dragon has ever summoned them from their chamber – a large heavy amulet in the form of a black dragon. No member, that is, save for one man.
The previous Black Dragon ruler, Bannak’s father, was an exceptional fighter in all arts. However, being one of the greatest wasn’t enough. He wanted to be the best. Bannak’s father summoned the ancient powers of The Black Dragon and bestowed them upon himself. Days later, in the middle of a fight, the powers went out of control. He began to die, and Bannak had to watch as the powers killed him from within.
Bannak took over as ruler of The Black Dragon, and had two children, their mother unknown. There was a son, Kebral, and a daughter, named Jola. Bannak vowed to keep the deathly powers locked away forever, and protect his children from the ungodly evil contained in the amulet.

PRESENT

Kebral and Jola have grown into adults, turning out to be both strong fighters. As Kebral was the first-born child, he is the heir to the throne and will take over from his father. Bannak knows how deeply this troubles Jola, and how much tension it has caused between his two children. He struggles to keep them together as a unit, continually reminding them that they are the heart of The Black Dragon and how weak the clan would become if they came to blows. United they will stand, divided they will fall.
As much as Bannak tries to keep them cool, he can see that Jola is becoming greedy, perhaps even dangerous. He has seen her obsessive interest in the amulet worn around his neck.  However, Bannak is determined: if Jola were ever to reach the powers of The Black Dragon, it would be over his dead body.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Unkown. We do not witness any of Bannak’s battles.

Shadow Priests

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Each other

Enemies:    Enemies of their master Shao Kahn

Fighting styles:    (of the Priests seen) CapoeiraVale TudoKarateJeet Kune Do

PAST

Almost nothing is known about the past of these ruthless monsters. Since they lurk around in long, black robes and hide their faces under a dark hood, it is sometimes thought that they conceal hideous features. Sometimes it is also said that they were once warriors from different realms, fighting against Shao Kahn to save their own worlds. But the Emperor of Outworld defeated them all, capturing their souls. It is said that he then returned them to a half-life, only to serve him and fight for him in the many battles he wars he caused. Only one of them has ever been seen without his robes. This man had the features of a normal human, but he did not show any signs of human emotion. He only spoke to Shao Kahn, informing him of any important information. Whether all of the other Shadow Priests look like him underneath their clothes is a mystery. The Shadow Priests have no free will, and they have no desire to do anything the emperor hasn’t ordered them to. They are ‘blessed’ with many useful abilities, such as sorcery, telepathy and unbelievable martial arts. Though there are many of them who serve Shao Kahn, none of the Shadow Priests appear to be female.

PRESENT

The Shadow Priests are now alert by their emperor’s side, as the war between him and his enemies gets more hostile every day. They can serve him in many ways. They can tell how many forces or armies an enemy has, or where an enemy came from. The Priests also serve him by decimating any foe the emperor choses. They are masters at torture, possessing the ability to keep someone suffering even after they die.

KOMBAT ABILITIES

Attack:
Since their are many of the Shadow Priests, it is hard to tell how their fighting stye works. They fight in many different ways, with many different styles. One of the Shadow Priests fights with Brute Force, using hell-raising wrestling moves and stiff punching to get him through a fight. Another Shadow Priest stands still while his enemy pummels him, waiting for them to wear themselves out or let their guard down, before launching a flurry of sharp jabs and kicks to mark the end of the match. So the styles of the Priests vary. But they use their techniques to such an extent that they can’t recall the last time their foes didn’t met their doom.

Defence:
As before, the ways of defense differs from one Shadow Priest to the other. But whichever way the Priests chose to defend, they will make sure that it is an effective way, and they will make sure that it is an offensive way.

Shao Kahn

Life Status:    Immortal

Friends:    Reiko

Enemies:    Kung Lao, Taja, Siro, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Rayden, Vorpax, Kitana, Reptile, Kreeya, Sub-Zero

Fighting styles:    Brute Force

PAST

Shao Kahn’s parents are Elder Gods. Shao Kahn was to become one also, until his parents had another child. Shao Kahn was given a brother named Rayden. When Shao Kahn and Rayden grew up to be adults, they were forced to fight against each other, for the family throne as an Elder God alongside their parents. After a hard fought battle, Rayden emerged as the victor, but he did not kill Shao Kahn as required. As a result, Rayden was given the rank as the God of Thunder, and protector of the Earth Realm. This however, was not as high in position as being an Elder God. As the Thunder God, Rayden was bestowed with amazing powers, transforming him into a being of pure electricity. Shao Kahn was sent as the emperor of a wasteland called as Outworld. It was a weak and unknown world, and Kahn might as well not have bothered to try and rule it.

But Kahn was clever. He tried his hardest day after day, and gradually he began to gain the trust of the citizens. Using this to his advantage, gradually he bagan to build an army. Eventually, he had forces worthy of conquest. Shao Kahn was able to invade other realms, and clame them as his own. His empire continued to stretch and stretch until all realms were part of Outworld. All except one. That realm is known as Earth Realm, the very realm that Rayden has sworn to protect. Coming to his aid, the Elder Gods set about rules if Shao Kahn was to conquer Earth Realm. They organised a tournament called Mortal Kombat, pitting Shao Kahn’s Outworld fighters against Rayden’s Earth mortals. If Kahn could win ten consecutive tournaments against Earth’s warriors, he was permitted to invade Earth and add the final piece to the Outworld jigsaw.

PRESENT

Unfortunately, Shao Kahn lost the last Mortal Kombat tournament. Rayden’s greatest fighter Kung Lao defeated Kahn’s most powerful sorcerer Shang Tsung in the final round. Earth realm was safe for another generation. According to the Elder Gods’ rules, that is. Kung Lao’s glorious win was to cost him dearly, though. As the current immortal champion of Mortal Kombat, he is the main target of Outworld assassins everywhere. Shao Kahn sends many fighters to kill Kung Lao, in the hopes that he will be able to defy the Elder God’s rules and conquer Earth Realm once and for all. Scorpion, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Rain, Mileena… these are only a few of the fighters who are hell-bent on hunting down Kung Lao, in the name of their true emperor Shao Kahn.

KOMBAT ABILITY

Attack:
Shao Kahn’s opponent’s fear one thing when fighting him – raw power. The strength of one punch is enough to have any mere mortal whimpering at his feet. Kahn’s might is unrivaled even by his archenemy, Rayden. But, unlike Rayden, Shao Kahn must make up for all of this muscle-bound mayhem. He is extremely slow when attacking. Shao Kahn does have the ability to pull off any type of move he wants, but he does it at such a slow pace that it will only strike an exhausted opponent.

Defense:
With his huge build and mountains of muscle, Shao Kahn doesn’t bother to defend. He isn’t very good at it anyway, he can only block the most obvious of attacks. His strategy is more focused on inflicting pain on his opponents, rather than preventing pain being inflicted on him.
